Snapshots with sun and sand

camera basics and understanding exposure
lesson/module/challenge 1

These photos were taken with my compact camera, a Nikon Coolpix waterproof camera. We really just use it for snapshots. I found it more of a challenge to take photos with given I’ve been really challenging myself to take control of the camera and this camera seemed to have all the control. It was only when I was at the beach that I thought I could re-do this challenge with the compact camera so I may be able to control more than I realise with the camera. I shot with a few different settings but settled on the “beach” setting, given we were at the beach early in the morning. Light was very bright, given the time. There was no shade except for the shadows we created ourselves. I was pleased with the results of beach setting, I felt that it made the colours really come to life. The second photo was taken on either Auto or portrait mode. Tiffany’s in her own shadow so she’s a bit dark. Had a great time and not once was I told to put the camera down or to stop taking photos. We played together and I just snapped when it wasn’t going to interrupt play.

I'm a full time stay at home mum to a gorgeous three year old. In a previous life I was a primary school teacher, teaching at a private girls school in Sydney. I may do a little bit of casual teaching in the near future. I'm in my mid-30s (how did I get here so quickly??) and have been married to Adam for almost 12 years.

  2. Gorgeous Michelle. You’re right the Beach setting is perfect for these shots. The colours are wonderful.
And you have a great eye for composition too – I love the angles you used to take these. Great job (especially with a compact camera) and I can’t wait to see more from you.
