Playing with angles

Playing with angles

Moments That Matter: lesson 5: topic 1: what’s your angle?

I got a new lens (35mm f/1.8) so have been playing around with it. All of these were taken on the Manual setting as well….which I think I need more work with as a lot of the shots had one eye in focus and the other out of focus which was a shame.
1. ISO200, f/1.8, 1/60 – this was probably the best one I took…but it could still be improved.
2. ISO400, f/1.8, 1/30 – a photo from above…playing around with angles.
3. ISO200, f/1.8, a/80 – such a cute smile in this one, but half of her face is out of focus.
4. ISO200, f/1.8, 1/80 – love Ivy’s eyes in this one, but found it was hard to take a shot with everything in focus.
Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks. 🙂

I'm a Sydney mum to 2 gorgeous girls and am pregnant with my 3rd daughter, who will join us at the end of March. I'm keen to learn more about capturing the best shots of my children and am excited to be learning how to use my camera.

  1. Hi Sally, at f1.8 you will never get all of the face in focus. You’d probably need to go up to f4 or 5.6 for that. It’s perfectly Ok for part of the face or one eye to be out of focus but it shouldn’t be the part of the face or the eye closest to you. Having the closer part out of focus looks wrong and feels a little uncomfortable for the viewer. More on that in Lesson 3, Topic 5 on eyes. Have a play with a smaller aperture (bigger f number) and focusing on the closest eye. I think you’ll like the results better. You may have to sacrifice a bit in ISO or shutter speed to get the f-stop up.
The one with the 3 girls taken from above is really cute but watch out for double chins when you’re taking from that angle – even beautiful little girls can have them at the wrong angle
Other than that the exposure is awesome and you have nice colour and tones in your skin.
Ivy sure is growing fast and she’s gorgeous. As are the other two of course 🙂
Well done and keep showing us photos of your beautiful girls.

  2. Thanks, Robyn. The problem with taking so long to finish the course is that I’m forgetting stuff…so thanks for the reminder to read over the lesson on eyes. 🙂
