My boys

My boys

I think that I can see where I went wrong in most of these shots. Not getting the shot in the right place.

  1. Hi Debbie, I’m not quite sure I know what you mean by not getting the shot in the right place. Are you talking about the composition of the shot? If so I think these are composed quite nicely. You use the rule of thirds well. If you’re not sure about the rule of thirds it simply means that the main thing in the image (the person usually – or the eyes in a close up) should not be centred but should be in one of the thirds. Check out the 10 tips free booklet for a bit more about the rule if thirds if you haven’t already http://pleasedontsaycheese.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/10_tips_web.pdf.

If you meant something else, let me know.

My other feedback is about the backgrounds. Try (if you can) to simplify the background. You can do this by using a shallower depth of field using aperture priority or Portrait mode (lessons 3 and 4), by removing distracting things from the background or simply moving to a spot with a less cluttered background. The background in the shot of your littlest one is particularly distracting because it is very bright while your son is in shade (much more on that in the 8 week online workshop).

Having said that, though, you have captured some gorgeous moments and you should be proud of these.

  2. You have some handsome boys there. And you’ve managed to get some nice moments captured in these photos.
