More metering practice

8 week online workshop
lesson 1
metering (again)

We were on the water run this morning and both girls were asleep in the car, so I took the opportunity to practice metering! Poor hubby was the unknowing subject, so the images are not particularly evocative, or even interesting, but they show the exercise quite well. It was an overcast day, and my husband is standing under a ‘shed’ starting the bore pump. Centre-weighted average made the whole imagedarker, partial was ok, and spot overexposed the background. I think I actually prefer the colours in the centre-weighted image in this instance, but it is definitely darker and if the light was different I guess D would be in too many shadows under this shed.

  1. Great exercise Sarah. Centre weighted is the default setting on cameras because it does work pretty well most of the time. And it does work OK this time too. The exposure on your husband is probably best on the spot metered one. But as you say that overexposed the background – that will often happen with spot metering as you are concentrating on getting the exposure correct for your main subject.
    Nice job!
