Millie in different modes

Millie in different modes

For this challenge I set my camera on each of the different modes as I took the same photo (of Millie, our garden cow, she’s a great model) from the same position etc so that I could see exactly the difference that each mode’s settings make. The first and second picture clearly show how much of a difference the depth of field makes to how a shot looks. The first, shot in aperture priority mode (which I use most of the time) with a wide aperture of f1.8 and ISO 800 (too high, I know!)1/2,500 makes the subject really stand out and the background is nice and blurred and not distracting. The second, shot in landscape mode so an aperture of f8 and ISO 400 1/80 has a lot in focus so Millie doesn’t stand out quite as much (although the exposure is better).
The third photo shows what Miss Cheeky gets up to while Mummy is playing with her camera, helping herself to the paddling pool in her pyjamas while I was distracted. Made some cute photos, though!

I live in the beautiful hills of Perth with my husband and three year old daughter. I have degrees in history and law but am staying home for a few years to raise my gorgeous little girl. I love creative pursuits, be it creative play with my three year old, sewing, or my new passion - photography. I've owned a DSLR for about 6 years but have only just started to really explore it's capabilities (and mine!).

  1. Nice to meet Millie. Looks like you have a nice big garden to play in!
Great use of depth of field. You managed to blur the background and the foreground.
As Millie wasn’t running around I’d probably drop the shutter speed to get the ISO lower – but you already know that 🙂 It’s also interesting that the exposure is better in the second shot. This is probably due to taking your exposure reading from a slightly different spot.
And that’s a lovely shot that captures the joy of your daughter playing.
    Well done!

  2. Haha I love the one of your daughter. She looks so happy. And who wouldn’t be sneaking into the pool in their pyjamas 🙂
