making breakfast

8 week online workshop
lesson 1
topic 2: more camera settings

I went into my camera and changed it from spot metering back to matrix for this assignment and I don’t think it made a big difference. I usually use spot metering, often with my auto exposure lock button, when shooting outside and shadows etc. make my kids faces darker than I’d like. (Looking forward to learning how to use it better!) Both photos of the ingredients in my kids’ smoothies were with my 35mm at 1/125s and f/1.8. My ISO was at 2000, because I forgot to put it back on auto. Maybe it should have been different. I like how you can see my son Ryan in the background of the second picture, but I think I should have used a slightly smaller aperture (and maybe higher ISO?) so he’s a little more in focus. I like the out of focus background, but maybe this one was too much.

My husband, John, and I have been blessed with two wonderful children. Ryan is 4 and Rebecca is 1 and they keep me very busy, but I love it. We live outside of Washington D.C. with our dog Cooper.

  1. It’s great that you already use spot metering Ashley. You’re a step ahead for one of the upcoming topics. There is also lots of information and activities coming up about apertures and ISO so perhaps after you’ve done them you can come back and look at these photos and decide if you would have done anything differently. My feedback is mainly about the background. The white/silver shiny thing on the right hand side (fridge???) draws my eye and distracts from the main subject of the photo. A tiny crop would fix that. Really nice job with these.
