Moments That Matter: lesson 4: topic 5: low light and indoor

Feels like ages since I uploaded some pics but I have been practising…promise! These pics of my baby girl, Ivy, were taken in the car in her capsule. I had the door open and she was looking into the light, so even though the background is dark and the light wasn’t particulary bright, looking into the light really captures those beautiful eyes of hers. I raised the ISO and opened up the aperture and really love these pics.
Pic 1: ISO 6400, f/4.5, 1/320
Pic 2: ISO 6400, f/5.6, 1/250
I’ve just bought a 35mm f/1.8 lens for my Sony Nex so can’t wait to start practising with that in low light situations.

I'm a Sydney mum to 2 gorgeous girls and am pregnant with my 3rd daughter, who will join us at the end of March. I'm keen to learn more about capturing the best shots of my children and am excited to be learning how to use my camera.

  1. Sally she’s gorgeous. And those eyes are so blue! A suggestion would have been to try to slow down the shutter speed so you could reduce the ISO. 6400 is giving you a bit of noise in these images. As she wasn’t moving you could have perhaps gone down as slow as 1/60 or 1/100. The result of the digital noise is that these don’t look quite as sharp as they could have. Apart from that the catchlights are lovely and having the background so dark has really drawn attention to Ivy and eliminated any distractions. Her eyes are nicely positioned in the image and you have captured some cute expressions on her face. Good job!
