Little girls eyes

Little girls eyes

8 week online workshop
lesson 3
5: simply eyes

I like this exercise, probably because like mothers the world over I am fascinated with my children’s eyes!

I took a lot of photos, and like Samantha, by the end of it the girls were screwing up their faces, or just walking away from me!

I chose the first image because both girls were looking at the camera at once, which feels like nothing short of a miracle for me. Though the more I look at it I wonder if the eyes are in focus enough, or if there are any catchlights… Maybe it’s not such a great photo and I am just a bit too happy to have both girls looking at the camera?

The image of Clare was taken while she was playing with toys outside, hence the red frame in the image. There are catchlights in her eyes, and they are smiling rather than silently berating me for pointing the camera at her yet again 🙂

The image of Lou was taken with me lying on the ground and her standing over me. I managed to cut the bottom of her chin off, but my eldest monkey just would not stay still. I still really like it though because it highlights her eyes, and her eyelashes.

  1. I love the last one Sarah. I think if you crop off the top of her head a bit it would balance nicely. Obviously it’s best noy to cut off chins but as you say it’s a gorgeous image apart from that and could be improved if it was a little more balanced. That way her eyes would be on the top third as well so would follow the rule of thirds. You’re right about the first one the eyes don’t really have catchights and could be just a touch sharper, but nice image all the same. The middle one of Clare is nice too but perhaps a touch overexposed on the skin tones. A very minor tweak in your photo editing program of choice is all this would need – we’ll cover this in lesson 8. Well done.
