Light movement fun

Light movement fun

8 week online workshop
lesson 2

I decided to have a bit of fun with shutter speeds this time. This is one of those spinning fan type light thingies (I’m sure that is their official name). I put my camera on a tripod and propped the spinning fan type light thingie on a dark chair then turned all the lights off. I used a remote to take shots at decreasing (longer) shutter speeds. All were taken on shutter priority at 50mm and ISO 100.
Image 1 was a shutter speed of 2.5. The whole cycle can be seen.
Image 2, 1/50 and you can just see a little bit of it.
Image 3, 1/25. This is actually my favourite, it kind of looks like a clown’s face 🙂
Image 4, 1/10. You get the whole cycle but not “filled in” the way the 2.5s one is.
I did the same thing with a flashing star light that changes colours too. It meant that sometimes you got one colour in the shot and sometimes a mix of colours. It was lots of fun to experiment. I’m going to try light painting with some stick led lights as well.

I live in the beautiful hills of Perth with my husband and three year old daughter. I have degrees in history and law but am staying home for a few years to raise my gorgeous little girl. I love creative pursuits, be it creative play with my three year old, sewing, or my new passion - photography. I've owned a DSLR for about 6 years but have only just started to really explore it's capabilities (and mine!).

  1. Awesome Siobhan. What fun! And what interesting effects you achieved. Isn’t it fun playing with your camera settings? The spinning fan type light thingy is really cool too. Absolutely sure that’s it’s official name. And if not, it should be 🙂

  2. These look great! It looks like it would have been a fun exercise – I am looking forward to trying this one out myself. We don’t have a spinning fan type light thingy though… wonder if I can google it and order one online 🙂

  3. These are very effective…they look great! It’s fun to play around with sparklers and slow shutter speeds, too. Have fun! 🙂

  4. You should market them as spinning fan light thingys they are brilliant photos I need to get a tripod.
