Deer next door

lesson 1
know your camera

I put on my 55-300mm lens and went in the back yard. This little guy was next door watching my dog run around behind the safety of a chain link fence. I was in aperture priority mode at 5.6 and my shutter speed at 1/160s. ISO was at 400. I’m please that he is pretty much in focus, since that was difficult for me zoomed in at 300mm. I wish the colors were a little most saturated and I would rather the composure not have him right in the middle, but I was happy I caught him before he ran off.

My husband, John, and I have been blessed with two wonderful children. Ryan is 4 and Rebecca is 1 and they keep me very busy, but I love it. We live outside of Washington D.C. with our dog Cooper.

  1. Nice work Ashley. Especially well done for capturing him, I’m sure he didn’t stay still for too long. The colours are pretty washed out – are you shooting in raw or jpeg? Sometimes raw images straight out of the camera need a little colour saturation boost and a little sharpening to bring out the best in the image. We’ll be covering this in the photo editing lesson. If all of your images are a bit washed out we can take a look at some other settings that can fix this. Keep up the good work.
