Challenge 5 – Shutter Speed

camera basics and understanding exposure
lesson/module/challenge 5

These are some of the pics I’ve taken recently with different shutter speeds.
The Sparklers shot was taken at 1/3 and I had the camera resting on a steady surface. A lot of the shots I took had very clear sparkler patterns but blurry kids…but I guess that’s the point?!?! I love this shot!
The jumping kids was taken at 1/500….I love how my little girl looks like a ballerina with her pointed toes.
The fireworks shot was taken at 1/3 but this time I was holding the camera….I find it really tricky to get a good shot of fireworks but was pretty happy with this one.
The pic of my daughter body-boarding was taken at 1/2000 and I love how you can see all the droplets of water so clearly.

I'm a Sydney mum to 2 gorgeous girls and am pregnant with my 3rd daughter, who will join us at the end of March. I'm keen to learn more about capturing the best shots of my children and am excited to be learning how to use my camera.

  1. Hi Sally. Good job again. The kids would be blurry as there is probably no way for them to stay still with the shutter open for that amount of time. But it’s a really cool shot. The fireworks shot is good considering you were trying to hand hold at 1/3 second. A tripod would definitely help. With the jumping shots it sometimes helps to set the camera to continuous so that it takes multiple quick shots.
All of these are good examples of shutter speed control.
